Israelis realize the Jewish ideal that says that someone who saves one life, it is as if they have saved the world. Each life is sacred. Each human being is a world on to themselves, with untold importance (if only for their family and loved ones).
As people around the world marked international Holocaust memorial day (January 27th), Israelis were in Haiti, saving lives. A different nation, with a different background, religion and culture, on the other side of the planet needed rescuing. We, who know suffering, cannot stomach the thought of standing idly by… The Jewish nation was murdered, tortured and burnt, while others saw and said nothing. Did nothing. Today we are like the mythological phoenix, risen anew, literally from the ashes of our grandparents. In the video below you can get a glimpse of our brothers and sisters, mothers and fathers, who swooped in to save the helpless in Haiti. This is who we are.
