Evil in our backyard

I was granted a preview of a special exhibition about the Hamas invasion of October 7th. The exhibition will open to the general public in October. Its Hebrew name translates to “The Courtyard of Evil” but the intention is more “The evil in the backyard”.

The atrocities were so extensive and their impact so enormous it is difficult to comprehend what actually happened. It is difficult to comprehend the enormity of evil. This is exacerbated by the intentional disinformation campaign waged across the world on legacy and social media, designed to allow Hamas to get away with what they did  and to further damage Israel.

That’s where this exhibition comes in. It puts together various aspects of the Hamas invasion that create a clear image of the methodological massacre.

The exhibition consists of:

1. A sampling of the enormous amount of weapons the invaders brought with them.
The terrorists managed to use only a fraction of what they had intended. The type of weapons tells the story of intentional brutality, designed to create pain and horror beyond the desire to slaughter. The origin of the weapons tells the story of which countries aid and support the aspirations of Hamas.

2. Images and some of the footage of the evil Hamas unleashed against men, women, and children.
What is shown is a tiny fraction of the atrocities and even that is difficult to watch.  Most people do not want to see. If you see, you have to comprehend that people can revel in brutality, that the words used to describe the massacre were not theory but things that happened to actual people – beheading, burning alive, sexual violence… that survivors searched frantically for their friends and loved and saw people in these conditions. That others were dragged to Gaza to be beaten, stomped on, and otherwise abused.

3.  Documentation found on the bodies of the invaders and found in the homes of Gaza.
From the documentation, it becomes very clear that this invasion was methodically planned for years.

  • There are training manuals and instructions for the invasion itself.
  • There are transliterations of commands so that Gazans who don’t know Hebrew could instruct their victims: Come here, stop, take off your pants…
  • We saw a map of a training camp built to practice the invasion. It is common for military to create a camp that mirrors their enemy’s military bases so they can practice attacking. This mirrored a kibbutz so invaders could learn to look for the synagogue and where the children would be…
  • UNRWA papers that shine light on employees who participated in the invasion and other ways they are involved in supporting Hamas in Gaza. Your tax dollars are going to these people under the virtuous title of “humanitarian aid”
  • Documents of religious instructions explaining that slaughtering every Jew they can get their hands on is a blessed activity. That it is their job to purify the land of Jews. They intended to wash through the entire country, to reach Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

Lots and lots of documentation… piles and piles of proof that this was not a spontaneous outburst of barbarity. It was a meticulously planned massacre they trained for, for years.

People wonder, how can human beings can commit the atrocities Hamas committed. How can they commit these horrors and be full of pride and glee?

Chopping people to pieces isn’t easy… Doing that takes dedication and persistence.

When you see the books found in Gazan homes, you understand that it is impossible not to become what Gaza became.

Hitler’s Mein Kampf was a bestseller in Gaza. Versions from different printing houses were found, indicating the popular demand. But those are books for grown-ups, it is the books for children that shape the society. Pictured here is the cover of one of the most popular series of books for kids. Every book in the series features a different, real terror attack, depicted in drawings.

These stories define for the children what heroism looks like and who they should aspire to be.

From infancy, the children are steeped in hate for the Jew, in every layer of their culture and life. It’s in the schools, in their homes, their summer camp, what they see on their streets, in their books, and on TV.

How could they not become what they became?

And the other question to ask is – who benefits from these people being who they are? Why are so many governments and individuals around the world adamant that Israel should not vanquish the evil of Gaza?

  1. I agree. It’s also convenient to not believe because it’s Jews… Also there are people who are secretly or not so secretly gleeful that others did the dirty work for them
