How long does it take you to get dressed in the morning?
When you are fast asleep, and the air raid siren goes off, you have to detach from your dream, gain your bearings, and hit the ground running to get to safety as fast as possible.
How long does that take?
In this war, we sometimes have the “privilege” of advanced warning. About 10 minutes. That’s for the horrifyingly enormous missiles from Iran.
But that’s only sometimes.
Missiles from Hezbollah in Lebanon are a different matter. Not as large, but still devastating and deadly. They are launched from much closer, which means we have almost no time to reach shelter at all.
In Haifa, it’s one minute.
From the moment the siren starts wailing until it stops. That’s all the time we have.
Can you go from sleeping, get dressed, grab everything you need, and reach shelter in just one minute?
It turns out that putting on socks takes a long time. I wear shoes I can slip on – a convenient shortcut when every moment matters.
Few things are as unpleasant as running to the shelter and hearing BOOM before you reach it.
